Established in 1852 as a Museum of Manufactures, it was established to house items from the Great Exhibition. It moved to South Kensington, becoming the South Kensington Museum, and was renamed the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1899 when Queen Victoria laid its foundation stone for the grand Exhibition Road buildings, which opened in 1909. Today, it’s the world’s leading museum of art, design, and performance, housing vast collections spanning 5,000 years of human creativity.
